Primary and secondary school pupils discover the maritime world during Sail InZicht

Inclusiveness

All primary and secondary school pupils are being introduced to the maritime world this week during Sail InZicht. Whilst primary school pupils from Harlingen took part in all sorts of fun workshops during the first half of the week, the second half of the week is dedicated to some 600 pupils from the RSG Simon Vestdijk. They will have the chance to discover the companies, organisations and professions that make Harlingen the maritime capital of the northern Netherlands.

Primary schools

At the start of the week, all the children from Harlingen’s primary schools took part in the workshops. From throwing ropes round the mooring post to making a diorama. And from painting on a tarpaulin to carrying out experiments with water.

Secondary schools

On Thursdays, maritime organisations across the city open their doors to pupils in Years 1, 2 and 3 of secondary schools. The pupils are given a unique behind-the-scenes look at companies and institutions that are not normally accessible to the general public. From shipping and fisheries to engineering, services, leisure and water safety.

During workshops, guided tours and practical demonstrations, the pupils meet staff members who talk about their work, enabling them to find out about the relevant training programmes and career opportunities.

Sail InZicht is the educational programme run by Tall Ships Races Harlingen and forms part of Expeditie Harlingen, a multi-year initiative by Harlingen Council.
