The imposing three-masted barque Artemis is immediately reminiscent of classic seafaring tradition with its appearance. The ship offers a combination of authentic sailing and modern comforts. This year, the Artemis celebrates her 100th birthday and that is cause for celebration. During Sail Harlingen, she will get something that has been missing for a century: a figurehead.
History
In 1926, the ship the Artemis was launched, hereby named after the Greek goddess of the hunt. Until the late 1940s, the ship served as a whaler on the Arctic Ocean and the Antarctic Ocean. In 1950, she was converted into a cargo ship. During this time, the Artemis sailed mainly between Asia and South America, while the home port remained Marstal in Denmark. At the end of the 20th century, the tall ship was restored, after which she can be found on northern European waters as a three-master since 2001.
